Another method would be to provide brief definitions of new terminology in
marginal notes (we used callout boxes) or a glossary. We did this in a
manual I wrote for a non-tech audience, and it worked out very well for
them. It also kept us from having to constantly reinvent/translate
terminology.

That could probably happen. It might be a solution to explain the term
"field" the first time it comes up in a procedure (Like "enter your
name in the Name field - the text box labeled 'name' at the top of the
screen".)
