That much said, a credit check isn't that unusual. You can't buy a cell phone,
car, or any major item without one. Why then an employer, who is taking a
bigger risk than a auto lender, not be allowed to do these checks. Hiring
somebody is a huge risk to a firm. Bad employees cost companies dearly.
The difference, of course, is that when you buy a cell phone, car, or other major item, the sole interest that the vendor has in you, the only thing he or she wants from you, is your money. A credit check gives the vendor (hopefully) a reasonable idea of your ability to provide that money as promised.
When you hire an employee, on the other hand, you do not want his or her money. (On the contrary, you are actually promising to pay the employee.) This is obviously a big difference, and makes any credit checks for loan purchases questionable as a precedent for credit checks of prospective employees.
And the question that has been posed repeatedly in this discussion remains to be answered satisfactorily: What does a credit check tell a hiring employer? Leaving aside especially security-sensitive areas, is an employer going to pass on a candidate that looks a good fit otherwise (and only those candidates are going to be checked anyway) because of a bad credit history?
