Gosh, I guess I'm so....90's. I use "field." Well, maybe because our
clients asked us, but that's beside the point. I'm violating (all kneel in
deference, please) the MS Style Guide.
If I had the choice, sans the edicts of Mr. Client, I'd probably opt for
"field" anyway. To me, the MS Style Guide is pretty confused about the use
of the term "box." For example, Your dialog box contains text boxes and
list boxes and group boxes, and several other box variations. Dialog box:
The entire mini-form. Text box: The square thing in which you type (never
enter) text. List box: Contains items to select. And Group box? A small
boxy area that is inside the big box and can contain smaller boxes, each of
which do something different.
This ability to use a simple word for such diverse functions is rather
clever, but it doesn't automically follow that it encourages clarity.
Of course, if our next clients demand we use the word "box," that's what
I'll do.
