I absolutely agree, Andrew.
On more than one occasion, I have gotten contracts to come in and create
custom documentation for OS applications that have been further
tweaked/modified for specific in-house functionality. The companies I
worked for (an insurance organization, a power company, a mortgage lender)
were all very pleased with the OS app they were using, but in each case were
very nervous about using it because there were only one or two individuals
in the organization who really knew the "ins & outs" of the application.
The suite of docs I produced for each them not only served as
end-user/training materials, but also as a way for the organization to
safeguard themselves against the eventual loss of the IT guy who knew how to
install, configure, and troubleshoot the app.

Thus, to make OS technologies productive for a larger environment, the
organization must invest in their own training, support, and documentation
infrastructure.

Documentation, training, and standardization are the kinds of things that
can
do that. That is an opportunity itself. Something for everybody to consider.
