Why JPGs? They are smaller than GIFs or other bitmap formats. They are also universally readable by web browsers. JPGs are also a lossy format, which means they interpolate some of the data (dropping some of it in the process), which helps make them small, but also might make them appear "blurry", depending on the image's subject.

So, if your help system or whatever you are doing relies on speed and small file sizes at the expense of minor differences in image quality, then choose JPG.
