One of the biggest issues to get a good small GIF screenshot is to correctly set
up your computer before taking the shots. Search the archives, because I'm
certain the full set up was posted on techwr-l.

At a minimum, turn off 3-D effects, turn off shadows, choose standard colours
(in the GIF pallete).
