I always use EPS images, as not only are they cross-platform but they also
have their size embedded as part of the code. In other words, if I create a
4"×3" EPS image, I can open in it in my application (FrameMaker, for me) and
the file is inserted at its created size - I don't need to tell FM which
resolution to use.
Then, my Prologue.ps file forces Distiller's interpolation to always be
"TRUE" and my images in the PDF are crystal clear.
One caveat about the cross-platform; my workflow and set up here means I do
all my image manipulation in Windows (even my Mac screen shots), and the EPS
files open without issue on my Mac. I have not, however, tried creating an
EPS on my Mac and opening it on my PC.
