TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
My favorite example of this was a student. First day of class, we are doing
the student intros (Intro to Tech writing). This lovely, attractive woman in
the back of the room introduces herself as the Admin Assistant at her
workplace. The employer sent her to the class so she can learn how to write
the company user manuals.
"They think that I can do that because I recently had an article published
in Cosmo," she said, laughter filling her face.
I fell apart with laughter too, as did the rest of the class. When I
recovered, I said, "It does seem the next logical step, doesn't it..."

It's not just you.
Seems that people assume that if you can write, you can write about
stuff other than what you know best.
