But knowing that things are not working and quickly understanding the WHY of
it not working are the difference. You have to know enough to know what
questions to ask.
If you don't know enough to know to ask the smart questions, you may think
the Q is broken because they are not done yet with that part and so you may
not ask. And then when you ask, you may not be able to understand the answer
without a lot of time from the engineer to explain it.
And since time is a commodity and we are all under deadline, the engineer
may not have the time to explain it to you so you understand it. Every hour
he spends with you is an hour he is not doing what he needs to do to get the
product out the door.
There is a huge difference in being in over your head and working at the
edge of your knowledge. I am happiest at the edge of my current knowledge. I
refuse work that has me in over my head because it is too much to expect
someone to pay me to learn enough to get up to speed.
