The ultimate pragmatic, I say include both. Make the heading something like
"Fans and Other Air Moving Devices (AMD), and include both entries in the
TOC and index, cross-referenced.

That will make the engineer happy, cover the reader who know what an AMD is,
and let those who don't know what other terminology exists.
