They said they wanted a font. We agreed that a font would be good. We
thought the multiple sizes, weights and colors were part of the problem in
the original manual. They had Arial in the original.
Myriad Roman is designed to be really readable at any size, which is
important because our users are working in a garage (dark, badly lit) when
they read and use the manual. Therefore, Myriad. We used color more
sparingly and minimized the random weights and angles.
There are other information design issues but better more useful information
and structuring it well helped that. OF course, they are taking a lot of
that out again.
Then we had to fit 35 pages of info into 26 pages. So the font size had to
go down to 9 point. It was the only variable we could change. Now it has to
be this 3/16 stuff.
