Come to think of it, maybe it was Kinison.

I realize that some people prefer a specific quality of life...don't take
this as the country has a BETTER or WORSE quality...it's just a different
one. To some it is being able to have kids play in the street...to others,
quality is being able to see hit 3 clubs every night.

However...to do X profession, you need places to practice it. If my
profession was designing space shuttles, I'd have to live in a place where
they do that. If I'm an automotive engineer, I need to live someplace
different. You cannot choose the profession you want, then expect that
everyplace you go, that skill is in demand.

However, I also don't believe in moving around from place to place for a
gig. All of my gigs have been where I could live in one general place. I
just made sure that I chose a place that had them available.

John's right, of course...to an extent. In the past 13 years I've moved from
Richmond to Raleigh to Petersburg to Chicago to Durham to Hamburg (Germany)
to Richmond, almost always because of work prospects. One does get tired,
and one does like the sense of building some permanence and "home" at some
point. Interestingly, I have made myself available for travel--I've been
willing to go anywhere for almost any length of time, but the companies
would rather hire locally (and thus cheaper) than to offer me a contract. So
I guess my comment on the state of the contracting world is that fewer
companies offer geographic-immaterial contracts. Seeing my address in
Richmond makes them feel, "Well, he's from out of town--too expensive,
because he'll have to get enough to cover expenses."

So the "MOVE!" quotation is both humorous and, unfortunately, not helpful.
Bit of a Hobson's choice, isn't it? I do think it's a funny quotation--was
it DM or maybe Sam Kinison? Hmmm...

thanks,

joe
