Hello,

To build on what Diane wrote in response to Sera:

"Sera asks, "Is there some mythical company out there who actually
values technical writers?"

Yes, the biotech firm I work for values technical writers...." <snip>

Yes, at least IMHO, is possible to find companies that value TWs.
However, even with management's support of TW duties and roles, it is
still important to build relationships with the subject matter experts
(SMEs) you work with every day. Management buy-in does not guarantee
SMEs' respect.

So, the point is, even with management support, you may still have to
work a bit to impress upon the SME that your contributions are
valuable. Working with SMEs is a special skill in itself, and it is not
always covered adequately in TW college courses.

While the SME-TW relationship is oft-covered on this list, this seemed
like a good time to remind potential newbies that a respected TW role
takes more than management support. But, of course, that support is
important too. Sera, good luck with your decision.

Regards,
Laura (just in from an ice storm in upstate NY - TGIF)
