Here's an example:

In the DTD, define an entity that points to another file:
<!ENTITY chapter1 SYSTEM "file://c:\xml\chapter1.xml">

In the XML document, reference the defined entity:
&chapter1;

This example should replace the "&chapter1" reference in the XML document
with the contents of the file specified in the "!ENTITY" statement when your
XML document is translated.

Your XML document reference looks okay. Have you defined "chapter1" in the
DTD?

Subject: DocBook: Using entity declarations to build a book

Hi again,

I'm using the latest DocBook DTD for XML (v4.2), but
I'm using Norman Walsh's "DocBook: The Definitive
Guide" (1999) to learn to use the DTD.

I've come up against a problem that may be caused by
advances in the DTD which occurred after the book was
published.

The book describes how to use entity declarations to
build a book. First you declare the entities, then you
refer to them (within a book element) using the
statement &chapter1;

This is causing validation errors in XMLSpy. Do you
know the correct way to refer to the entity, so I can
build my book?

Thanks,

Rowena
