It's uncannily difficult to clearly define a professional technical
writer (something to do with horsepower in the conceptual engine,
life-long student of process, fanaticism for appropriate message
presentation, and vivid empathy). But if you work it the other way and
define what is a profession and what makes any person professional, you
should find many technical writers nodding from experience at each
point.

Here's another stab at defining the profession -- Technical writers are
concept mechanics. (Once we clearly define "concept", we're home free
;-)
