I find it helpful for a couple of reasons. I'm not on digest, so if I don't check mail for a day or so, I have several dozen messages from Techwr-l. I sort by subject, and just delete the OT ones. The copywriting list actually has codified this, and you are required to preface your subject with Query, Chat, Biz, etc.. also makes it easy to filter with your email program.
