And, in some states at least (I'm thinking of CA here), engineers are "exempt" - exempt from overtime and such, and are on a straight salary no matter how many hours they work. Someone else can fill in the details better than I, but I've seen that happen in places.

I feel lucky where I am. I'm considered "exempt" in that I don't get overtime - but I do get paid for every hour worked, so when I was here until one in the morning one time working on a proposal, I got paid for all of those hours. I also don't need to spend half an hour in paperwork to get approved to work an extra hour. I work until I get the project done, and I get paid for what I work. At times I wish I got paid time and a half for the extra hours, but other times I'm happy that I do get paid for when I work. Being a first time homeowner (as of last Friday), that is a big help.

I suspect it's because most companies these days get their pay
ranges off standardized research, and having "engineer" in the
title can help reinforce the technical parity between a technical
writer and and engineer. In the company at which I had the title
of "Research Engineer," the pay range for RE1-4 was exactly the
same as for the engineers (ME1-4, EE1-4, etc.)
