France -

The at-work birthday recognition (or lack thereof) that I've experienced
over the years has included:

- the day off with pay :)
- no acknowledgement (think of Scrooge's office...)
- being taken to lunch by/with the rest of the team (usu. an in-house
"pot-luck" planned by the previous person to have a birthday so everyone
gets a turn)
- cake & ice cream in the break room for all (as the company grew in size
and shrank in budget, this became ice cream bars all around)
- a can of soda, a candy bar, and a helium baloon tied to your cube
- sleeping in that day and going out for brunch with my best friend (when
I'm working from home)

Not an overly inspiring list, I'm sure.

A friend's company treated birthdays as personal April Fool's days.

Do you still have the questionnaires? Maybe something in them might suggest
an appropriate recognition for this year??

You could always have a white elephant birthday - where people give gifts
that keep on being given as the birthday year progresses (i.e., Joe got this
from Sue, then passed it on to Mary, who gave it to Todd, who actually
-liked- it [no one knows why...])

best of luck,

L
