To reiterate and earlier point...

Most of the posts on this thread are people thinking and arguing at an
individual level or tactical level. $3B in tax breaks may seem horrible at
the tactical level or for individuals working hard to save money.

But in tough economic times, businesses (and governments) must think strategically.

What you are saying is true. However, it's also true that strategic thinking that ignores the tactical often ends in disaster.

Company officers like to imagine themselves samurais, Antarctic explorers, and young kings of England invading France, so let me give a military analogy:

One of the reasons for Napoleon's successes was that he had a brilliant quartermaster who ensured that supplies got to where they were needed when they were needed. He had an unpleasant time in Russia because his army's supply line was stretched too thin. Looking at a map, invading Russia seemed a logical strategy. However, he forgot the tactical view of soldiers advancing step by step, and as a result lost his grip on power.

In the same way, taking business off-shore may seem a good strategy for the bottom line. However, the ill will it can generate (as evidenced by comments in this thread) may make it a bad strategy in the long-term. It's a short term solution that a company may later regret.
