You do have to show them some point of reference, but
a "prtfolio" is a very vanilla means of going about
it.

I don't put myself on a pedestal. I also don't walk in
empty-handed. I just don't tote a portfolio around. I
prepare specific examples, which may or may not be
former work samples, based on their needs and my
thoughts as to what I can deliver for them.

If you were hiring an interior designer, would you be
more impressed by one that came in and showed you
samples of all the houses they did in the past, or
someone who contacts you ahead of time, finds out what
you are looking for, and then brings a few patterns
and preliminary texture samples to discuss in the
context of your home and your disposition?
