Bearing in mind that my reply is colored by the fact that
I started out as an engineer, I would recommend a course
of study leading to a BSET (BS, Engineering Technology)
combined with a technical writing certificate and a healthy
dose of intern work in an actual product development
setting. Here's a link to the BSET program at my own
Alma Mater:

The school appears to be focusing the program around AAs
transfering into the program these days, but when I went
there it was common for students to begin in any engineering
program and then change their majors at the end of soph yr.
I imagine it's still possible to do that today.

work in a field that is active and hot in the spring of 2007?
