I can verify this. Last contract, the client's doc template had a LOT of
specialized macros - but they only worked if I had the client's Normal.dot
template.

Since my own Normal.dot has a lot of personal customizations and I didn't
wish to lose them, I solved the problem by renaming my Normal.dot and used
theirs instead for the duration of the contract. Once I finished, I renamed
the client's Normal.dot to Client Name Normal.dot and renamed mine back to
Normal.dot.

Clunky, but it worked, and I didn't have to resort to bad language or hair
pulling.

Woody made the mistake of assuming because the GUI won't let you do it,
templates don't have a reference to their creator. I unfortunately have had
this nightmare before. They do, just Word won't let you at it. It can cause
missing references when those templates are placed on another machine
without their 'based on' template present. It shows up in the VBE's Tools
References list as Missing. Damn annoying really.

So the golden rule is always create your templates based on Normal. If you
have a template for templates, copy and rename it when making a new
template.
