I usually send my drafts as low-res pdfs, but that's
usually either because they're Frame or Quark files
going to reviewers who can't read them or Word files
large enough to choke their email. I haven't had any
problems with people demanding editable drafts or
absconding with the work; they reason they brought me
onboard in the first place is usually because they
want someone else to do it.

Tom,

I am contracted to deliver a draft, allow the customer 10 days to respond
with changes, and then make the changes and finalize the document.
Nothing in the contract calls for me to deliver editable content, so
delivering it in a non-editable format would seem to me to show good
business sense, not bad faith or pre-emptive action.
