"Seema" <seema27 -at- fastmail -dot- fm> asked:

> What is the significance of part numbers in documentation deliverables?

Manufacturing part numbers are used to track versions of documents and
aid document production. If you are using a document management system or
a manual tracking process, you can assign unique part numbers to specific
versions of a particular document. If all the versions of your documents
are in a central repository, the customers and others can retrieve the
exact version of a document by specifying only the part number. It is
allocated at the starting phase of the documentation life cycle and is
used as a refernce key throughout the process as well as after the
document release.

Normally, there will be a single authority (such as the publication
manager or a senior executive in the publication department) to manage
the part number allocation for all the projects in a company. Like
document naming conventions, a company will have its own conventions for
creating part numbers because the part numbers should convey what they
mean to customers in a uniform format. For example, all the part numbers
allocated to documents that support a product version will have the same
prefix.

Hope this helps.
