Right, but what can you do (except apply for clearance
and hope that pays off)?
----------------------------------------------

You can apply for the job!

We all know that posted "job requirements" are simply a wish list of what the hiring manager would like if she lived in a perfect world. That topic has been bandied about here a few times.

If you are a qualified competent writer, the odds are that you will get hired. Only those writers currently working in a position requiring a clearance have a "current clearance". Even if the hiring manager persuades someone to change companies, there is still an open position somewhere requiring a clearance. Sooner or later someone is going to get hired "off the street" and get their clearance.
