A lot of people seem to talk about the obvious: the wriing skills, the
ability for us to learn, tool knowldege, business & marketing, office
politics, etc.

What's missing roots itself in how the profession is being defined here:
technical writing vs. technical communication. If you realize that it's
really the latter, then you begin to understand that's it's about a whole
lot more than "just" writing.

For example, knowing how people process information helps us design that
information. Knowing the physiology of sight helps us design how information
will look. Knowing differences in culture helps us design information so it
can be translated easily. Knowg how people do their work helps us design the
product (the product itself communicates).

And that's just a few right off the top of my head.
