Mike, there are companies in Minnesota that I have gone through a personal contact, was offered the job only to find out that I needed to go through a recruiter because the company could not take me (my company) on as a preferred vendor, so then my rate gets slashed and I have to work with a recruiter. There are several very powerful Fortune 500 comapnies in Minnesota that will under no circumstances take someone without a recruiter, this just happens to be one of those companies. It is a good company, and the recruiter is not the one who made up the rules regarding the test, the client did.

On the other hand, perhaps it's a great job, but the recruiter is wacky.
Maybe the employer doesn't know about or even approve of this test.

The usual advice applies: try to rely mostly on personal contacts and
networking.
