If you already have any character styles applied, aren't you going to loose
them?

I suggest creating a Character Style called Highlight and apply it
where you need it. I think you can leave all properties "As Is" except
Color and set that to Red, for example. When you no longer need it to
flag things for yourself, redefine this style with everything "As Is"
except set red to black.
