> They make it based on price and
capability. Licensing is an afterthought.<
>> I'm not so sure about that. Changes in
licensing schemes have produced statistics
that suggest that many organizations have
reconsidered buying products as a result.<<
I attended meetings to discuss how to split
a product that is currently delivered free
as part of a larger operating system bundle.
Part A of the product is highly desired, and
we could gain revenue if split, while part B
is used by far fewer users, but is still
used by many customers and we would still
provide it for free.
Technologically, the product could be split,
but the licensing for those obtaining one,
and then wanting the other at a different
time, or purchasing factory integrated with
one, but not the other, or purchased as a
separate product were too challenging
to overcome, so the product was left alone.
It was felt that these issues would take
precedence over the product itself in the
customer's mind. We would rather provide
the product free than risk alienating those
customers with very confusing ordering and
licensing rules.
Licensing was very much in the forefront of
discussions of the future of this product,
and in spite of the potential for increased
revenue, licensing issues came first, for
the sake of the customers ease of use.

not in Microsoft
