Moving deadlines only works to improve productivity if the new deadlines are successfully met. If they are ignored, then you are correct that shortening deadlines does not improve productivity. I should have stated that explicitly earlier.

However, the rest of your argument is bogus. At the level of granularity where productivity is actually measured in a product development environment, it makes no difference how many words you write in the one hour a day you spend at the keyboard writing. What matters is how many days you take to finish the document. If you finish it to an acceptable quality level in four days instead of putting a museum-quality sheen on it in five days, you've gone from 0.20 documents per day to 0.25 documents per day, which is a 25% improvement in productivity.
