Hi, Beth:

From your wording, it sounds as though the whole idea of UNIX is intimidating you. If that's true, relax. Despite what you may have vaguely heard about UNIX being a hardcore techie's operating system, using UNIX on a day to day basis doesn't feel that much different than using Windows or the Mac. Yes, you do some things differently, but those differences aren't so much harder than what you're used to than simply different.

In fact, at times, sometimes, they're actually easier. For example, many people are nervous about UNIX because they hear that a lot is done from the command line. That's true, but when people feel nervous about the fact, they're usually thinking of how unfriendly and rigid DOS is. However, the difference between UNIX command lines and DOS is the difference between a Lada and a Lexus. Once you get to know what to do, you can do some pretty amazing things from a UNIX command line - things that are actually hard to do from a GUI. And, nowadays, most of the different types of UNIX have a GUI that a Windows user can learn within minutes.

Yes, you face some learning. But the lessons can be interesting. Just set about them systematically, and you should do fine.
