TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
We looked at them fairly seriously for a bit. It would solve some of our
print difficulties, but cause others, so we decided to stay with our current
printer, with a few changes on their part.
It's a nice idea, and works well if you need to post individual chapters to
the site for outside consultants (or whatever) to select various chapters
for their specific needs. However, that would not allow them to have a
dynamic ToC or Index, one drawback we thought was significant.
The print quality is good, from the demo book I printed during a
demonstration with one of their folks, actually using their site for the
demo. And the "order by 22:00 Eastern" to get it shipped to arrive the next
day is a good thing, if you're willing to pay for it. Yes, one must use
their printer driver, but that's really just the upload function to the
website. Think of it as a specialized FTP use. You'll get a lot of info
during the walkthrough demo, and by all means, ask all the questions you can
think of. We asked several the representative had never considered or had
never been asked before. It was interesting to hear how he handled the
surprises.
All in all, a lot of what they offer is a bit high on the $$ end, but has
nice features. It all depends on what you're after.
