Hi Joan,

Last time I looked and quoted (for French to English) about two years ago the going rate was between £60 and £150 per thousand words. I quoted at the lower end as I am not a professional translator with experience or a qualification. The rates also vary slightly with the language (difficultly and rarity) and of course a technical specialist will be able to command about 10-20% more than a non-specialist. All this data comes from the European market.

She is, of course, offering to translate into her native language ... isn't she? If she's offering Hebrew, then the rate is probably above the half-way mark on this scale. Copy editing rates, as far as I remember, also vary quite a lot, with the top end being, at most, about half that of the relevant rate for translation. Others may have more recent experience.

HTH,
Ant

Can anyone provide a ballpark estimate of current rates for book copy
editing and current rates for translation? An overseas relative of mine is
bidding on copy editing and translation projects and she's trying to come
up with a competitive price based on the fact that bids from
English-speaking countries will be her competition (she's in Israel). I
think she's looking for rates per page or per 1500 characters or something like that (yeah, I know, not much to go on, but those are all the details I have).

thanks for any help!

Joan Goldstein
