Hi Abhijit,

The Chicago Manual of Style is an excellent reference for this type of thing and ohhhhh so many other issues. ;>

In section 5.106 of the 14th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style, one usage of an em dash is in the middle of a sentence. Here's an example.

The cookies were there--looking at her beguilingly--but she steadfastly refused to eat them.

[in this example I'm using two hyphens as an em dash]

The coverage in section 5.106 continues through 5.119, covering all sorts of dash issues including en dashes.
