I need to ask for some tool help: MS Word and Visio.
I'm having problems with these that I've never seen
before. I've gone through the MS support knowledge
base and found nothing about these problems.
I have one Word file in which the spell checker acts
oddly. This is a file that I received from someone
else in a different office. The file was prepared
using exactly the same software setup that I have -
Word 2002 running under XP. The first time I tried to
run the spell checker, I got the prompt, "Microsoft
Word can't check the spelling or grammar in this
document. This feature is not currently installed.
Would you like to install it now?" I selected "No" and
the spell checker started running. But that time and
every time since, it apparently can't recognize simple
English words. It alerts on words like "heat" and
"units." It even identifies the word "and" as being
misspelled. But, it does still find actual misspelled
words like "functoin" instead of "function." I see
this behavior only in this one file - the spell
checker works normally in every other file. As far as
I can tell it has not caused any problem or corrupted
the file in any way, but it is confusing.
I also have a problem in Visio when I try to open or
save a file. This one does cause me problems. When I
start Visio and try to use the File menu to open a
file, the file browser window works for only the first
two directory levels. If I try to select a directory
three levels down, Visio locks up. When this happens,
if I still have the file browser window open, I can
click Cancel and go back to the Visio application. But
if I switch screens and then go back to Visio, the
file browser window is malformed and the Cancel button
is not visible, and I have to use the Task Manager to
stop Viso. If I start Visio by locating a file in
Windows Explorer and double-clicking on it, no matter
how many directory levels deep it is, Visio opens the
file with no problem. But, when I try to save a file,
I get the same two-levels-only behavior from the Visio
file browser. This happens only when I select "Save
As." If I save the file under the same pathname, there
is no problem. I can save a file under a different
pathname if I type the absolute pathname in the Visio
file browser "File Name" field. I am sure this is a
Visio problem and not an OS problem, because no other
application exhibits this kind of malfunction.
Any advice on how to solve these problems - short of
reinstalling the applications - would be appreciated.
PS: I'm running these applications on a Gateway
Pentium 4 laptop - maybe that's the source of the problem.
