>superior and subordinate?

Nope...not the same thing. Gotta stop thinking along the lines of
"bigger/smaller" or "important/less important", or "first/second".

Master/slave relates to a process where one device, the "master", by
it's action, initiates an action by other devices, the "slaves".

Think of a photo studio. There is a photographer and on his camera is a
strobe light wired to the camera. Scattered around the studio are
multiple other flash units. They aren't wired to anything, except they
have a light sensor.

When the sensor on each of the Slaves sees the flash from the Master
strobe light on the camera, they flash also.

They aren't subordinate, they infact may be much bigger. The Master
might be a palm-sized unit and the Slaves might be huge floor-standing
devices with huge reflectors.
