Well, hopefully this person provided background about his affiliation
with these references. If not, I'd ask the candidate for that info
first. As a job hunter, I include a short history (one brief
paragraph) explaining how the reference and I worked together and a
bit about our interactions. As an employer, I look for this same
information, as it helps me determine just what type of a reference
this person is and the job info in the summary helps me determine what
kind of questions to ask.
If this person is going to collaborate with you on a new application,
I'd ask about project management skills, communication skills, and
ability to work with other departments (marketing, sales, tech
support, etc.).
Basically, think about the role this person would play on your team
and make sure you cover, generally, all the high-level bases. Let the
references dive into detail - don't push them for info. I find that
the way they answer questions, just as with an interviewee, is more
important than the answer itself.
