Sorry to hear you have such a negative outlook. You always have value. But
is your value worth your cost? As soon as your cost exceeds your value,
can you honestly (as a professional) justify your continued employment?
The value of documenting mundane everyday products (microwaves, VCRs,
simple software interfaces) has rightly dropped. However, documenting
specialised technical know-how or complex systems still has great value.
So does managing and coordinating projects.
If you want to continue documenting 'mainstream' systems for the same high
rates, you're in for a rude awakening and should probably get out of
technical writing (if you have other skills that will pay better). But, if
you're willing to adapt you skills and knowledge there's no need to look
at techwriting as dead-end.
