I am trying to figure out why I feel very uncomfortable whenever people
talk about the need to "demonstrate our value." I don't mean to
criticize any particular individual or organization, but this idea is
talked about a lot. I just don't get it.
How many people really feel that the profession is undervalued? All of
the clients that I have had since a third of my former company was laid
off in 2001 have come to me because they wanted my services. All of you
who hold full-time jobs are employed because your employers want your
services.
What exactly are people complaining about? I just don't understand. Why
should the STC talk about demonstrating our value? We have value. I
would suggest that if we don't know it inside ourselves and act
accordingly in our lives and our jobs, kvetching is not going to solve
the problem.
