It's a good point, but managing a list of who gets the dead tree version
mailed out shouldn't be that difficult. The real question is how many
fixed costs are associated with producing the printed version. If the
production work is done on a volunteer basis it's ego that's bruised. But
if it's professionally done, the per copy cost may sky-rocket. Equally
true that printing is a numbers game. Reducing the number of copies
doesn't necessarily reduce the cost if you were previously getting a
volume discount.
That said, stored and archived in a database it should be easy to be able
to have website delivery of articles and import those same articles for
layout in the printed version.
Still got to say the STC could learn a lot from Raycomm and the TECHWR-L
website. ;)
