I've always felt one of my strengths as a technical writer is that I do
have a technical background.
It definitely helps :->
What I can't understand is the number of technical writers who not only don't have one, but don't make any attempt to get one.
I still remember how shocked I was when a local STC bigwig told me that the way they wrote API documentation was to paste some comments from the code, then get a developer to write an example. I never told this person, but I lost all respect - and I resolved at least to try to be different.
Sadly, I've heard and seen just as bad many times.
