We sell HSMs (hardware security modules) for cryptographic 
applications. In my customer docs I talk about volatile 
and non-volatile storage.  

I don't see the problem. They are well-worn, unambiguous 
terms that have been in use for decades.

Do we really need to reduce them to "forgetful" and "retentive" 
or some other cuddly terminology?

Besides, if the problem you had with volatile/non-volatile 
is that some readers would insist on equating volatile 
with violent, hot-headed -- rather than "evaporates readily", 
then they'll be the ones who will manage to misuse "retentive" 
or any other term you dream up. Cater to sensible, serious 
product users, not to nutbars.

My four bucks worth.  :-)
