Considering the varied opinions expressed in the past about CV/Resume and 
hiring issues, the short answer would seem to be: "He can't".
Which 'pile' an application lands in is often a twist of the arbitrary and 
arcane rules employed by the reviewer.

Fill in the institution, the dates, the program, don't fill in the degree. 
That's honest and about as much as you can place in a canned application 
form. Unfortunately, he risks being judged as incompetent to fill in a 
form completely or fail to meet whatever education requirements the hiring 
company has. Very little you can do about that though.

I always included a CV/Resume and a cover letter with each application 
form. Perhaps "refer to resume" might be appropriate for the 'unfillable' 
boxes on the application.
