Ok I'll Play
> 1. How long have you been a technical communicator?
8 years (i'm probably the baby of the group)
> 2. Have you noticed changes in software programs that you use? Explain
> briefly.
Started in the Navy using WordStar and Word Perfect, now use MS Word
(blech) and Frame (yay).
> 3. Have you noticed a change in salary? Explain briefly.
No not because of tech writing. I did get a pay cut once (company
wide) because the company sucked. I could make about 25K a year more
as a contractor and ride my wife's benefits if I wanted to.
> 4. Do the tasks that you complete now vary from what you did when you began
> working in this field? Explain briefly.
Yes. My first technical document was a Weapons Firing Doctrine for
the ship I was on. Now I write user's manuals and other related
documents.
> 5. How many times have you changed jobs or relocated?
I have relocated in my adult life 4 times, but not as a tech writer.
As a tech writer in the last 5 years I have worked for 4 companies. As
a contractor for one of those for a year. One of those companies went
out of business after I was with them for 18 months. I also have my
own company on the side as a freelancer.
