Good news: "MS Shell Dlg" is right there in the Name column of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes

Bad news: Changing its value didn't achieve David's stated aim. Sigh.
