It's widely used on genealogy websites for viewing and downloading images of
censuses and vital statistics images such as birth, marriage and death
certificates. I'm not sure of the reason it's so popular but it does seem to
download very quickly. You can see an example of it on
www.scotlandspeople.com and, I think, www.archives.ca, the website of the
National Archives of Canada.

See www.lizardtech.com for "Document Express" and its format, DjVu. It
appears to be extremely interesting for intranets, dealer info, and
the like...because the file sizes are so much smaller than Acrobat
files, and apparently you don't have to worry about installed font
problems.
I would be interested to hear any real-world experience with this
technology...
