I think some confusion arises in the "tool
vs. writing" discussion due to definitions.

I spent much of yesterday taking a big mess
of links on a web page and putting them 
into a usable table format (and sadly, they
weren't *quite* regular enough to automate 
the process).  Was this "tool use", or,
because I was using my brain to present
information in a much more usable format,
was it "writing"?  Tool knowledge and
tricks certainly helped a lot.

(Yes, I know it wasn't "authoring" - red
herrings to the left, please; herrings
of other colors to the right ...)

Or for another example, is deciding whether
to use an animated simulation vs. text
to describe a process writing?  How about
producing mockups of each?

Point being, if I had to fill out a time
sheet using "tool use" and "writing"
columns, that would be largely creative
fiction writing ;)
