For those of you still wondering what a DFD is, here is a chapter with
examples:

They are commonly used in systems analysis when designing a software system.
However, as Tony points out, they can be used to analyze any process where
there is a flow of information. They are the opposite of flow charts, which
describe the flow of program/process execution. DFDs are stateless---they
only describe where data goes, not when or in what sequence.
