Sue:
Whenever you ask for something of value, you have to
sell, sell, sell yourself. Ever wonder why
politicians - and big buck consultants - are always
smiling?
The same holds in technical communications: To get
what is really important - essential procedure, you
have to really sell yourself. And since DFDing is
tech comm on steriods, well you get the picture.
Kool Aid and/or Dr. Pepper helps one to continually
maintain a "smiley" posture.

Huh?
I mean -- *excuse* me?
I realize that we've already flogged this dead
equine beyond
all recognition, but WTF does smiling have to do
with it?
I think they've been spiking your Dr. Pepper, Tony.
