It really depends on what you intend to do with the books. If you want to
offer them for sale, then print on demand is a good idea. Trafford http://www.trafford.com/ is one of the oldest around and has a good rep
based on people I know who have used them. There are similar ones out there,
just watch for terms ... they should not have any take on the copyright at
all. For this, it doesn't matter if they are local.
If you can demonstrate a market, then traditional publishing can follow.
If you were intending to just distribute them to family and friends, then a
local book binder might be a better idea. They can take the book blocks that
you either printed out or had copied and then do anything from a perfect
bound trade paperback to a leather covered hardcover. Centennial http://www.centennialbookbinding.bc.ca/ is a local-to-me company that I've
included just as an example ... For this, I recommend someone you can go
see. I'm assuming you know the basics of page layout -- being a tech writer
-- and yes, text-only books are easy to do in Word, just get thee to a good
duplex printer.
Plus, book making is a popular hobby ... check local nightschool and weekend
courses. It's actually easy and doesn't take much in the way of supplies.

Can anyone recommend any good resources for
self-publishing? I have a book of short stories my
dad wrote that I'd like to publish.
